Hello! It’s me, Wilfred. I usually live in Toronto, but for six months, I am living in England with my two dads. My poppy needed to be here for his work so our whole family came to live life in London.
This week at my school, Ravenstone Prepartory, we learned about Florence Nightingale. Next week, the Form 2s will put on a play about her at an assembly and I am playing the part of Florence Nightingale’s dad.
Ravenstone
Florence lived in the Victorian era. Her dad taught Florence and her sister at home, because girls weren’t supposed to go to school, they were supposed to stay at home and sew and look after the house, while the boys did all the fun stuff. UNFAIR! Florence wanted to be a nurse, so she went to the Crimean War (which was in Russia where my friend Vladi is from) and she became the most famous nurse ever. They called her the lady with the lamp and if you want to know why, you will have to come to see our play!
Already this term, we learned about Christopher Columbus. The Form 2s did an art project about him that decorates the wall in our studio. I helped make his ship, the Santa Maria!
There are lots of exciting things about London, but the best part of living here is the parks. We live near three really terrific ones – Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Holland Park. We go to Kensington Gardens a lot.

Wilfred at Kensington Gardens: The Movie
Holland Park used to be the gardens around a palace that belonged to the Earl of Holland. (My middle name is Earl. No relation, says Dad). It was called Holland House and the palace was older than Buckingham Palace or Kensington Palace. Today, the gates to the old palace are on Kensington High Street at the top of Earls Court Road.
The palace was very beautiful and had a lot of famous parties, but in the war, a bomb hit the palace and blew it to pieces.

One of the surprises there is that the old palace used to have peacocks wandering around the earl’s garden – and they are still there! LOTS of them! Boy peacocks have beautiful tail feathers, which they open like a big fan to show off to girl peacocks. Girl peacocks are mostly brown. They didn’t pay much attention to the boy peacocks when we were there.
The girl peacocks (peahens) are the brown ones. |

It really is one of the best playgrounds! If you come to London, be sure to check it out.
Well, I will talk to you next week. Bye for now. Wilfred

Hi Wilfie! You probably don't remember me, but my name is Lindsay and I work with Carol at Geirge Brown making costumes! It's been really neat following your blog and living vicariously (which sort of means sharing your experiences) with you in London! Carol and I both live hearing about all your adventures and seeing your great photos. Will you say hi to your Dads for me and Carol? Thanks! Keep up the great blog Wilfie!
ReplyDeleteHi Wilfred, I am very impressed with the Christopher Columbus display, particularly that excellent ship, the Santa Maria. Do you know the names of the other ships in Christopher Columbus' fleet? Do you think you are kindred spirits, because you certainly are doing a lot of exploring! What do you suppose Mr. Columbus wrote his observations on or in?
ReplyDeleteI know how you must feel about the swans. I went on a field trip to the Toronto Islands when I was in Grade One and while I was feeding popcorn to some ducks, a very aggressive goose came over and bit my thumb! I was pretty upset about that. For the next few years my thumb had a wart on it right where I was bit. It finally went away when my grandmother rubbed it with a potato which she then buried in the backyard under a full moon. I don't know that she actually did this because it was past my bedtime, but she said she did. My father, who is a doctor pooh poohed the potato remedy, and I'm inclined to believe him, but I was glad the wart went away all the same.
I'm looking forward to reading more adventures!
xoxo Robin
Hello Dear Wilf! It is Nadene writing you from a very dreary Toronto today. It has been raining and snowing at the same time which I do not like much at all and hope that the sun will come out very soon! I have been loving all your stories about your adventures with Poppy and Dad. I can't believe that a workman made a hole in your bedroom!Thank you very much for the video on "How to mind the swans" I did not know that about swans and if I ever make it to London I will be sure to do so. I miss our "play dates" but I am very glad to see that you are having a wonderful time! I cannot wait to read about your next adventure!
ReplyDeleteTake care and big hugs to you and Dad and Poppy!

Hi Wilf (Jim and Ray!)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. It is very interesting. I have been to London many times but not to Holland Park. It is fun to share London "through your eyes". The pictures are fun too. We hope to see you in Ocean Park this summer!
